To further promote the excellent traditional Chinese culture, enhance cultural exchanges among Chinese and international students, and improve students' humanistic literacy and cultural identity, our college successfully held the "Beginning with Attire, Reaching for Profoundness" Hanfu Culture-themed Experience Activity in the 118 Conference Room of the School of Environmental and Safety Engineering on November 5, 2025. The event received high-level attention and strong support from the college leadership, attracting enthusiastic participation from numerous Chinese students and international students. The atmosphere on-site was lively, and the outcomes were remarkable.
At the beginning of the event, the college leaders delivered an enthusiastic speech, emphasizing the importance of cultural education. They pointed out that Hanfu is not only a carrier of the long history and splendid civilization of the Chinese nation but also a cultural bond that connects the past with the present and bridges China with the world. Encouraging the students to experience the profound depth of Chinese culture and promote mutual learning of civilizations through exchanges, the leaders' care and support injected strong momentum into the smooth progress of the event.
The core event featured a lecture on traditional Chinese attire titled "Beginning with Attire, Reaching the Vast" delivered by Wang Wentao, a renowned cultural instructor from Zhenjiang City. With profound knowledge and vivid language, Professor Wang guided the audience through time and space, revealing the enduring heritage of Chinese civilization through the evolution of clothing. He meticulously analyzed the fundamental forms, developmental trajectories, and cultural connotations of Hanfu, interpreting the ritual norms, philosophical concepts, and aesthetic values embedded in attire. The theme "Beginning with Attire, Reaching the Vast" profoundly illustrates the path of cultural cognition and transmission—from the external attire to the expansive realm of civilization and spiritual realms. The lecture, rich in visuals and classical references, captivated every listener present, sparking a deep interest in traditional Chinese clothing culture and etiquette.
Following the enrichment of theoretical knowledge, the event featured immersive cultural experiences, meticulously designed with two traditional craftsmanship activities: archery and lacquer fan-making.
The archery field was filled with laughter and joy. This ancient ceremonial game not only tested participants' skills but also reflected the ancient philosophy of "balance and restraint." Chinese and foreign students enthusiastically tried their hands at drawing bows and shooting arrows, experiencing the refined entertainment of the ancients and feeling the unique charm of Chinese etiquette culture through repeated aiming and shooting.
The lacquer fan-making area is enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility and focus. Under guidance, participants personally engage in the process, adorning plain white fan surfaces with flowing colors through techniques such as dotting, staining, and outlining to create unique lacquer fan pieces. This is not merely a hands-on craft practice but also a dialogue with classical aesthetics, allowing everyone to deeply appreciate the intricacy and ingenious craftsmanship of traditional Chinese artistry while creating beauty.
Throughout the entire event, there was frequent interaction and harmonious communication between Chinese and foreign students. International students have shown great enthusiasm for the beauty of Hanfu, the fun of throwing pots, and the exquisite lacquer fans. Chinese students enthusiastically explained and actively assisted, further deepening their understanding and sense of pride in their own culture while serving as cultural ambassadors. The venue has become a small Sino foreign cultural exchange salon, where the charm of Chinese culture is effectively spread in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
This Hanfu cultural experience activity is a successful cultural education practice. It integrates knowledge, fun, and interactivity through a diversified model of "lectures+experiences", not only popularizing Hanfu and traditional cultural knowledge, but also building an effective cultural exchange platform, allowing participants, especially foreign students, to touch and perceive the pulse of Chinese culture up close and deeply. The activity effectively enhanced students' cultural confidence and national pride, enriched campus cultural life, and created a campus cultural atmosphere that advocates tradition and inclusiveness.
Starting from clothing, reaching far and wide. Although this event has come to an end, the seeds of cultural inheritance and exchange have quietly been sown. The college will continue to explore more diversified forms of cultural and educational activities, guiding students to become loyal inheritors, conscious disseminators, and brave innovators of excellent traditional Chinese culture, and contribute to promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning, and enhancing the cultural soft power of the college.
